River Cleanup started in 2017 with a 10-minute cleanup and was founded in Antwerp in 2019 as a nonprofit organization. In our first five years (2019-2024), we activated 288.000 volunteers via 6.224 events in 101 countries, removed 3,6 million kilograms of river waste from nature and developed the Clean River Model as an open-source theory of change for plastic-free rivers.
As Head of Finance at River Cleanup, you take the lead in all aspects of our financial management. You strengthen financial processes to ensure compliance, accurate and timely internal and external reporting.
Oversee daily financial operations: accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting for a Belgian nonprofit.
Ensure full compliance with Belgian nonprofit financial regulations and donor funding requirements.
Prepare accurate financial statements monthly, quarterly, and annually for management and stakeholders.
Manage cash flow and forecasts, lead annual budget planning and financial strategy.
Coordinate with auditors, accountants, legal, HR and external financial partners for smooth operations.
Support project reporting, grant management and maintain strict cost control across all programs.
Advise management on finance strategy, risk management, and long-term sustainability.
Maintain and update finance manual and internal financial policies and procedures regularly.
Minimum 3 years’ experience in financial management within a Belgian nonprofit organization.
Strong knowledge of Belgian accounting standards and nonprofit financial regulations.
Proficient in accounting software (WinBooks, Exact Online) and advanced Excel skills.
Fluent in Dutch or French and English; other languages are considered an asset.
Combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution and strong attention to detail.
Excellent people, communication, and negotiation skills for collaborative financial leadership.
Proven ability to work independently with effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
